Part 1: Directions: Watch the video, read the text below, then translate the text in your primary language and read it again.

English Learners, for Formal Greetings and Farewells, imagine having a conversation with acquaintances, colleagues, educators, and employers using formal language. How would you start a conversation? What would you say?

Imagine recognizing an acquaintance at a restaurant you like. What would you say?

Imagine you’re on vacation and you notice one of your colleagues is sitting next to you, on the bus. What would you say?

Imagine you’re at a movie theater and that you notice your favorite teacher is sitting right next to you. What would you say?

Imagine you’re applying for a job and you’re interviewing for the first time with a potential employer. What would you say?

In American English, there is formal and informal language. We usually use informal language with family and friends, and use formal language with acquaintances, colleagues, educators, and employers.

PART 2 — DIRECTIONS: Read the dialogue below in English, then translate it and read it in your primary language.

Dialogue 1 — Formal Greetings

  • James:        Good Morning, Professor Austin, how are you doing?
  • Professor Austin:   Good morning, James. I am doing well. And you?
  • James:        I’m great, thank you. This is my friend Emma. She is thinking about applying to this college. She has a few questions.   Would you mind telling us about the process, please?
  • Professor Austin:   Hello, Emma! It’s a pleasure to meet you. I’m more than happy to speak with you. Please stop by my office next                          week.
  • Emma:       It’s a pleasure to meet you, professor. Thank you so much       for helping us.
  • Professor Austin:   Don’t mention it. Hopefully, I will be able to answer your questions!
