Shopping happens everywhere on Earth. If you want to shop, you need to communicate. Imagine you’re in San Francisco, in the United States of America, and you’re having conversations in English about shopping. What would you say? What would others say to you? Here are a few suggestions:
— You’re at a shoe store, and you find a pair of shoes you like, but can’t find your shoe size. What would you say to the shoe salesperson? What would the salesperson say to you?
— You’re at the world famous Ghirardelli store in San Francisco. You want to buy some chocolate for your family, but you don’t know what to choose. What would you ask the salesperson? What would the salesperson say to you?
— You’ve been saving money and doing lots of research on new cars. You know the carmaker, the model, and the color of the car you want to buy. What would you tell the car salesperson? What would the car salesperson tell you?
Shopping in the United States of America can be a pleasant experience when you communicate clearly and effectively in English. What would you buy right now if you had money to spend?
PART 2 — DIRECTIONS: Read the dialogue below in English, then translate it and read it in your primary language.
Dialog 18: Shopping
- Salesperson: Can I help you?
- Gloria: Yes, I’m looking for a sweater – in a size medium.
- Salesperson: Let’s see … here’s a nice white one. What do you think?
- Gloria: I think I’d rather have it in blue.
- Salesperson: OK … here’s blue, in a medium. Would you like to try it on?
- Gloria: OK … yes, I love it. It fits perfectly. How much is it?
- Salesperson: It’s $50. It will be $53, with tax.
- Gloria: Perfect! I’ll take it.
PART 3 — DIRECTIONS: Watch, read-along, and pronounce with the video below a minimum of 2-3 times. After you finish, let us know what you learned via the comments section below.
Time ago I wanted a pair of shoes. So, I asked for the price. The salesperson said something that to me sound like fifteen or fifty. I decided to pay with a hundred dollars bill rather than be ashamed.
My Grammar that time was worst than today.
