Communication is important, but many of us don’t know how to do it well. That’s where this article comes in.
In this post, I’ll walk through seven steps you can take to become a better communicator.
This will help you be more confident in your communication skills.
And that’s not all. You’ll also get a chance to ask me some questions and receive a special offer!
STEP 1: Set Your Goals and Write Them Down
What do you want to accomplish with your communication skills?
Do you want to start a conversation with new clients?
Do you want to become a more effective presenter at conferences?
Do you want to write more effective emails?
Do you want to improve your social media presence?
Write these down, then set a goal for yourself.
STEP 2: Determine Your Audience
Who are you communicating with?
Are you trying to communicate with someone who is already your client?
Are you trying to communicate with a potential client?
Or are you trying to communicate with your own staff?
Once you know the audience, determine what they need from you.
They may want you to be more confident or more open.
If you want to be more confident, make sure you’re having more conversations.
If you want to be more open, be willing to share your thoughts and ideas.
STEP 3: Define Your Message
How do you want to present yourself?
Do you want to be direct and to the point?
Do you want to be vague and open ended?
Is there something specific you’d like to communicate?
Don’t overthink it. If you can figure out what you want to say, then that’s all you need to say.
STEP 4: Determine How You’ll Communicate
What is your preferred method of communication?
Text messages? Emails? Phone calls?
Which medium is most comfortable for you?
If you prefer to communicate via text messages or phone calls, then be sure to include a call to action (CTA) in your emails and messages.
STEP 5: Determine Your Delivery Style
How much do you want to talk?
Are you going to be concise or detailed?
Is there anything you’d like to leave unsaid?
Do you want to use short sentences or longer paragraphs?
The way you speak and the way you write are very different.
And you don’t have to make a choice. If you’re not sure how to communicate better, simply pick one and see what works best.
STEP 6: Determine What You Want to Achieve
What is your objective?
Do you want to learn something new?
Do you want to improve a skill?
Do you want to build relationships?
Are you looking for a job?
Once you’ve set your goals and determined what you want to achieve, decide what you’ll do to reach them.
Will you write a blog? Make a video? Attend a conference?
If you want to write a blog, what topic would you like to write about?
If you want to make a video, what would you like to talk about?
If you want to attend a conference, where would you like to go?
Write down your plan.
STEP 7: Measure Your Success
Did you reach your goal?
Was it worth the time and effort?
Did your efforts lead to a better outcome?
Did you learn anything?
You don’t have to be perfect in order to succeed.
The only thing that matters is if you reached your goals.
Did you? If so, great.
If not, then try something else.
You don’t need to be perfect at everything. You just need to be good enough to make progress. Thanks for reading!
